Got referred here by my Neurologist and ENT at USC. They both recommended Dr. Elisha for my TMJ and Head Neck pain. As always I like to pay for my consultation as I think it is great value to get the right diagnosis and a complete treatment plan. He spent over one hour with me and I really appreciate his attention to detail and the diagnosis. I get why he is so busy.

One of the best things about having a specialist is that you can be sure that they know what they are doing. TMJ Specialists is centrally located and they know what they are doing. Their customer service is second to none, which, after their being experienced in what they do, is the second main reason for utilizing their services. TMJ & TMD FAQs

What is TMJ?

TMJ stands for the Temporomandibular Joint. The TMJ is the joint that connects the jawbone to the skull. It can be found on both sides of your head, just below the ear. Frequently people use the abbreviation TMJ for disorders of the temporomandibular joint when in fact, that is referred to as TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder). Therefore, TMD is actually the proper terminology for a disorder with the TMJ.

What is TMD?

TMD is a disorder with the temporomandibular joint and its associated muscles. It can be painful and make movement difficult. The cause isn’t always clear, but generally, it has to do with joint and muscle stressors. TMD is chronic and needs to be managed over time.

What are the main causes of TMD?
Although the cause of TMD may not always be clear, we have found that the following can either cause or contribute to it.

  • Jaw injury
  • Jaw/mouth infections
  • Teeth clenching/grinding
  • Arthritis
  • Infections (tooth infection, mouth infection)

What are the symptoms of TMD?

  • Pain in the jaw
  • Pain in the ear
  • Neck/Shoulder pain
  • A popping or clicking sound when opening the mouth
  • Chronic headaches (including migraines)
  • Difficulty chewing or swallowing
  • Temple pain
  • Throat pain

How is TMD Diagnosed?

TMD symptoms can indicate other health problems, so it is best to see a TMD professional as soon as you have any symptoms. They can do a thorough examination and give you an accurate diagnosis.

What are the treatments for TMD?

Treatments vary depending on the severity of the TMD:

  • Medicine: Muscle Relaxers, Anti-Anxiety Meds
  • Mouth Guards (to prevent grinding)
  • Jaw Positioners
  • Dental Work
  • Injections
  • Dental Surgery (for severe cases)

Where are some at-home tips to help with TMD?

Please always consult a dentist or TMD doctor for a diagnosis before starting at-home treatment, but here are some things that will help.

  • Over-the-counter/at-home treatments like steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (ibuprofen)
  • Hot and cold compresses help with pain
  • Avoid hard and crunchy foods
  • Stay relaxed and eliminate stress
  • Chew with both sides of your mouth

Is there a cure for TMD?

Although there is no permanent cure for TMD, we can provide treatments and help for long-term management and lifelong successful relief.
